The pattern is that discrete precise actions favour the mouse and continuous navigational gestures favour the trackpad. A designer selecting a specific pixel wants a mouse. Someone reading through a long document and switching between windows is faster on a trackpad.
Gaming is the least ambiguous entry. The precision, speed, and button access a mouse provides are not approachable with a trackpad for anything competitive.
The ergonomic case for both
Repetitive strain comes from repetition in a fixed posture, and using one input device exclusively for hours does exactly that.
A mouse loads the forearm, wrist, and the fingers used for clicking, with the hand in a pronated position. A trackpad loads the fingers and wrist differently, with more finger movement and less arm movement.
Alternating between them distributes the load across different muscle groups and postures, which reduces cumulative strain more effectively than optimizing the ergonomics of either one alone. That is the underrated argument for a hybrid setup — not efficiency, but not doing the same thing all day.
If you use a mouse predominantly, a vertical or ergonomic design reducing forearm rotation is worth trying. If you use a trackpad predominantly, an external one positioned to avoid reaching helps.
Position matters as much as device. A mouse placed far from the body forces shoulder abduction, which causes problems no device choice fixes. Keep whatever you use close and at a height that keeps the forearm supported.
Trackpad quality
The variation between trackpad implementations is larger than between mice. A good trackpad — large, accurate, with reliable click mechanics and no cursor jumping — is a pleasure to use for hours.
