The split is commonly 2.5 inches left / 6 inches right on a standard page, with a 2-inch strip at the bottom. The exact proportions matter less than maintaining the three distinct zones.
How to use it in five steps
- During the session — fill the notes column only. Record key ideas, examples, and facts. Use abbreviations. Do not worry about the other zones.
- Within 24 hours — fill the cue column. Write a question or keyword that triggers recall of each cluster of notes. "What causes the blood-brain barrier to open?" not "blood-brain barrier."
- Write the summary strip — 2–3 sentences in your own words summarizing the whole page. This is the hardest and most valuable step.
- Cover the notes column — use the cue column to test yourself. Try to recall the notes from the cue alone.
- Review the summary strips first on any subsequent session — they give you the map before you go into detail.

Paper has one advantage over digital: you physically cover the notes column with your hand or a card to self-test. Digital tools require a bit more discipline to achieve the same effect.
How to choose when to use it
Cornell works best for content you need to retrieve later — studying for an exam or certification, understanding a complex technical domain, structured learning programs. It is less suited to fast-moving meetings where you need to capture action items and decisions, not concepts. For those, use freeform notes and convert the key concepts to Cornell format within 24 hours if the material is worth retaining.
Common mistakes
Skipping the cue column. If you only fill the notes column, you have a page of text with no retrieval structure — no better than any other notes. The cue column is not optional.
