Gym cancellations are deliberately friction-filled — that's the business model. The good news: federal rules tightened in late 2024 and 2025, and most chains now allow online cancellation if you signed up online. The bad news: the in-person and certified-mail requirements still exist for many memberships, and front-desk staff are trained to delay you.
Here are the actual scripts, addresses, and templates that work in 2026.
What changed in 2026
The FTC moved on negative-option marketing.
- The FTC's "Click-to-Cancel" rule is now in effect — companies must allow cancellation by the same method used to sign up.
- Several state attorneys general filed against gym chains in 2024–2025 for non-compliance, accelerating policy changes.
- Most major chains updated their cancellation flows in 2025, but enforcement and front-desk practice still lag.
How gym contracts actually work
Three things to know before you start.
- Annual contracts vs month-to-month. Annual contracts may carry early termination fees.
- Auto-renewal language. Many "annual" contracts auto-renew month-to-month after year one.
- Notice period. Most chains require 30+ days notice — your last billing cycle is normal.
Planet Fitness — the easiest of the difficult
Planet Fitness requires either an in-person visit to your home club or a letter via certified mail. Online cancellation is now available for memberships originated online (per Click-to-Cancel), but in-club originated memberships still require the original method.
Letter script: "I, [Name], membership ID [#], am cancelling my Planet Fitness membership effective [30 days from receipt]. Please confirm in writing. My address is [...]."
Send certified mail with return receipt to your home club's address.
LA Fitness — certified mail is standard
LA Fitness requires certified mail or in-person at the club where you signed up. Their cancellation form is downloadable from their website. Allow 30 days.
Script for in-person: "I'm cancelling my membership today. Please give me the cancellation form and a signed copy when complete." Don't accept verbal-only.
Equinox — easier with proof of move
Equinox allows cancellation at any club, with 45 days notice or end of contract term. They commonly try to convert you to "freeze" or downgrade. Hold firm. Documentation of a move outside their service area waives the term.
Orange Theory — by location
Orange Theory's franchises set their own policies. Most accept in-person or certified-mail cancellation. Some require 30 days, some require completion of any prepaid sessions.
24 Hour Fitness — online for newer memberships
24 Hour Fitness updated its flow in 2025 — most members can now cancel online from the member portal. Older paper contracts may still require certified mail.
Anytime Fitness — by franchise
Each Anytime Fitness location is independently owned. Cancellation policy varies. Read your specific contract; the corporate website's policy is not binding on franchisees.

Common mistakes to avoid
Cancelling your card instead of the membership. Most contracts let the gym send you to collections for unpaid dues. Cancel the membership, then change cards.
Believing "we'll cancel for you" verbally. Get it in writing. Take a photo of the signed form. Save the certified mail receipt.
Skipping the post-cancellation check. Watch your statements for 60 days. Wrongful charges happen monthly. Dispute promptly.
FAQ
What if they keep charging me?
File a chargeback with your card issuer. Cite the cancellation date and your written confirmation. Most issuers side with consumers on documented cancellations.
Do I have to give a reason?
No. "I'm cancelling" is enough. Don't engage with retention pitches.
What about the FTC rule — can I just sue?
Click-to-Cancel violations can be reported to the FTC and your state AG. Class actions have been filed; individual private rights of action vary by state.
