Dust reduces cooling gradually. Nothing fails suddenly, the fans just run a bit faster each month, until eventually the machine is loud and hot and it seems like it has aged.
The cleaning that fixes it is simple and is also where most dust-related damage actually occurs.
What changed in 2026
- Filtered cases became standard. Most cases shipped with removable washable filters, making maintenance easier.
- Electric air dusters replaced canisters. Rechargeable blowers displaced compressed air canisters for regular use.
- Positive-pressure designs spread. More builds used intake-heavy configurations to reduce ingress.
- Laptop serviceability stayed variable. Access to fans and heatsinks remained inconsistent across models.
Hold the fans still
The single most important rule, and the most commonly ignored.
Blowing air through a fan spins it, and a fan spun by external air can turn faster than its design speed and can generate current back through its motor. Either can damage it.
Hold each fan blade still with a finger or a cable tie before directing air at it. This takes seconds and prevents the most common form of self-inflicted damage.
The same applies to blowers on power supplies and graphics cards.
Method
Power off and unplug. For desktops, unplug from the wall rather than relying on a switch. For anything with a battery, power down fully.
Work outside or somewhere ventilated. The dust goes somewhere, and that somewhere should not be the room you are in.
Blow rather than vacuum. Vacuum cleaner nozzles generate static as air and dust move through them, and static is a genuine risk to components. Blowing displaces dust without that risk. If you use a vacuum, use it to catch dust in the air away from the machine, not against components.
Keep canisters upright. Compressed air canisters spray liquid propellant when tilted or inverted, which is extremely cold and can damage components. An electric air duster avoids this entirely and pays for itself against repeated canisters.
Use short bursts rather than continuous blasting, and keep the nozzle a few centimetres away.
Soft brush for stubborn deposits. An antistatic brush or a clean makeup brush works. Avoid anything that sheds fibres.
Isopropyl alcohol for residue, on a cloth rather than sprayed, and only on surfaces that need it. Not on screens without checking the manufacturer's guidance — many coatings do not tolerate it.

Filters first. A filter is designed to be cleaned and stops dust reaching everything else. Rinsing filters monthly is most of the maintenance, and it is easy enough that it actually happens.
Heatsink fins are where dust matters most thermally. A layer across the fins blocks airflow through the fins, which is precisely where heat leaves the system. Blowing through them from the exhaust side pushes the dust back out the way it came in.
Do not remove coolers to clean them unless there is a reason. That means reapplying thermal paste and risks damage during removal, for a benefit you can usually achieve with air.
Where the machine is on carpet or on the floor, raising it a few centimetres reduces ingress considerably — dust concentration is highest near the floor. That plus fan curves tuned properly does more for noise than anything else.

- Not holding fans still. The main damage cause.
- Tilting compressed air canisters. Sprays freezing liquid.
- Vacuuming components. Static risk.
