Codec names appear prominently on headphone boxes, and they explain a smaller share of what you hear than almost anything else about the headphones. The drivers, the acoustic design, the tuning, and the fit all matter more.
That said, codecs do something real, and knowing which differences are audible saves money.
What changed in 2026
- LE Audio and LC3 spread. The newer standard reached more devices, improving efficiency at a given quality.
- Auracast broadcasting appeared in more products. Shared audio streams moved from specification to shipping hardware.
- Codec support stayed fragmented. Platform differences in which codecs are supported persisted.
- Latency improved generally. Both codec and stack improvements reduced audio delay.
The basic constraint
Bluetooth has limited bandwidth, so audio is compressed before transmission and decompressed at the headphones. A codec is the scheme used for that.
Both ends must support the same codec. A headphone supporting a high-bitrate codec connected to a phone that does not falls back to whatever both support, which is usually SBC. Paying for a codec your source does not speak buys nothing.

SBC is worth defending. Its poor reputation comes from conservative early implementations; at higher bitpool settings it is considerably better than its reputation suggests and is entirely adequate for most listening.
Where codecs are audible
Latency is the difference most people can actually perceive. Audio delay relative to video is obvious once it exceeds a threshold, and codecs differ meaningfully here. For video and especially games, a low-latency codec or a dedicated low-latency mode matters.
Most platforms now compensate for audio delay in video playback, which is why video is usually fine while games — where compensation is impossible — are not.
Connection stability varies. The highest-bitrate modes are the most fragile, dropping out in congested environments. LDAC at its maximum rate is notably less robust than lower settings, which is why many devices default to an adaptive mode.
Battery life is affected. Higher bitrates cost more power at both ends.
Sound quality differences between competent codecs at reasonable bitrates are subtle and much smaller than the differences between headphones. Anyone attributing a large sonic difference to a codec is more likely hearing a different device.
Microphone quality is separate
A frequent confusion. When a Bluetooth headset is used for calls, it typically switches to a bidirectional profile with much lower audio quality in both directions — which is why music sounds dramatically worse the moment a call starts.
